So You Want To Build A House?

I thought the time would never come, but we are closing on our house in a matter of days and I could not be more excited! In honor of closing being so close, I thought I would put together some thoughts on the whole home building process. A new home, whether purchased or built, is such a huge step for anyone, and our process was unique to us, our wants, and the life we are building.

The thing with a house, is whether you rent, buy, or build, it requires a lot of thought and consideration. What is best for some is not necessarily best for others. Going a step further, what works best for some will not work for others. Every family is unique and different, and coming to the conclusion to build a brand new home is no easy task. So, while we are nearing the end of our journey, I thought it would be good to provide a bit of insight as to our story, how we got to where we are, and my recommendations to anyone who is looking into a new construction!

1. How did you decide to build?
Really, we never wanted to build a house. We did know a few things with certainty, though. We knew which school district we wanted to be in, and we knew that we wanted to be out of town, on at least 2 or so acres. The district we are in and our land demands create for a challenging home search, plain and simple. With a great education system and beautiful community comes a price. We actually watched the housing market like hawks for a solid two years from around the time we got married. In that time period, two houses were listed that were enticing enough to look at, one we seriously considered, but ultimately, to get the land and privacy we were looking for, we were going to have to do some pretty significant sacrificing on the interior of our house. It was looking like a small kitchen, no master suite, tiny bedrooms, and other details were what we would be looking at to purchase a market home.

We had decided to list our home last summer, with the mindset that if we sold, we sold, and would figure it out from there. We didn't want to miss out on any potential opportunities that might come up, because we knew from experience that quality listings sold ridiculously fast.

We did also watch the 'land' market during that time, but not much came up. Like I said, we live in a high demand area. One day last fall, one of the lots I had casually bookmarked had a drop in price, so I mentioned it to Mike. He drove by one afternoon, and despite being the one who would usually put together a laundry list of  'problems' with any given property I sent him, all he had to say was 'I think we should call the realtor'. So I did. We walked the land that we had overlooked for the past year or so, and in standing out there, it just felt like home. I could picture us playing outside with the kids, looking out the windows as the snow falls, and planting a garden in the back. Pretty impulsively, we made an offer, and in a funny twist of fate after three months on the market with no bites, we received an offer on our house. We closed on both within a week of each other. It seriously was like the stars aligned. I hate to be that cheesy person who talks about fate and signs, but it truly felt like God was telling us this was the right move.

2. What were the first steps to getting started?
We did things pretty backwards of what a lot of other people do. In my experience, the majority of builders have lots they already own, and more often than not, they will meet with a new client, go over location options, standard floor plan options, and let the buyer choose from there. Our first step was buying the land, because that is what all of our decisions were to be centered around. After that, we discussed the 'must have' details for our new house, took those to a local lumber supplier, and sorted through their floor plan selection. We had to go through this process twice after a setback, but once we had a finalized floor plan, we purchased it and proceeded in selecting our builder.

3. How did you select a builder?
We took into consideration recommendations from family, friends, and our realtor, but I can tell you that our realtor hit it out of the park with his recommendation. We initially were planning to go with someone else, but consistently felt as though they weren't listening to us, didn't understand our needs, and just in general weren't meshing well with us. After some frustrating events with them, we decided to look elsewhere, and on a whim reached out to the builder recommended by our realtor. After meeting with the sales and design staff, and we were sold. We walked away feeling as though he knew exactly what we wanted, and could visualize and put into place what we were dreaming of without us even having to say it. He has also been wonderful with providing us options that can cut costs, and input as to whether something is worth any extra cost or not. We really trusted his judgment and have been nothing but satisfied with his company thus far.

We have been slightly less impressed with the project management side of the company, but at the end of the day, we have been happy with our experience. There are a lot of moving targets when building a home, so if you truly want to make sure that things go as smoothly as possible and stay on track, I highly recommend being as involved as possible. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't be afraid to point out things that seem to have been missed. Project managers are great, but they are human. If you are like me and have a husband who could probably have done the job himself, utilize that knowledge and ensure your builder is living up to their end of the deal. You hired them, and they are working for you. Keep this in mind and don't be afraid to advocate for what you want, because when all is said and done, you are the one who will be living in the house!

4. Were there any hidden surprises?
Um, yes. As I mentioned above, we had a floor plan selected, and at the time of selection were given an estimated cost to build. The first builder we met with agreed that the pricing was accurate, so we proceeded in making adjustments, modifications, and tweaks to the plan until we were ready to take it to bid. This builder was not good at listening to us, so we wasted a lot of time going over minor details they couldn't seem to get right, only to have the plan eventually go to bid and come back WAY out of the estimated price point. We are talking a whole new class of house price point. So, we went back to look at plans, found another that still had everything we wanted, but that we were assured would actually come in closer to budget, and had to go from there. Our new builder was very up front about what certain things would cost, why a bid would come back higher, etc., but selecting a new plan did push us back about a month in our process. Never be afraid to ask for specifics, and be as up front as possible regarding what you are able and willing to do to ensure that this doesn't happen to you!

5. Does it cost more, less, or the same amount as buying a pre-owned home?
More. without question. Think of it this way; usually when you are buying a home that has already been lived it, things are out of date, appliances are closer to needing updating, and there is likely work to be done. When building new, who wants to deal with poor quality, or not having exactly what they want. We certainly have had to discuss what we are willing to sacrifice, but at the end of the day, we just knew we wanted the french door refrigerator, and I knew that I wanted painted versus stained trim in the master suite. We went with the doors that are sturdier and require less upkeep, and other minor things that you wouldn't even think of, like rounded edges on the walls. These little things add up, but we decided that if we are going to build, we are doing it right and aren't taking shortcuts. I do like the fact that everything will be new and high quality, meaning in the long run things will hold up better and hopefully require less maintenance.
6. What were your biggest road bumps?
Definitely having to start over with our floor plan! That was just the worst. We had a week or two there where we really felt like everything was falling apart, and I was convinced I would spend the rest of my days living in someone else's basement. Of course, we trucked through, found our perfect alternative, and are at a good place today. We have also had to simply deal with things like figuring out how a construction loan works versus a standard home loan, how to roll our current land loan in with the new construction loan, and how to most efficiently do this.

We also learned that a lot of banks require a much larger down payment for a construction loan than they do for a home loan. Our builder recommended a bank that totally worked for us, but that was another scenario where I definitely got stressed. I assumed a home and construction loan were relatively the same, but that is most definitely not the case. It is a good idea to know your local banks and options, how their specific loans work, and what you will be capable of doing.

7. Where to splurge?
We wanted to be as cost efficient as possible when building our house, and decided that a lot of things can be upgraded. Countertops, flooring, and carpet can all get switched out, and likely would be due for an upgrade in ten years or so after lots of wear and tear from two busy boys :-)

With that being said, we did not cut corners in our master suite. We knew we wanted both a shower and a jet tub, and that was pretty much non-negotiable. I also want white trim and painted cabinets, and so we are going that route in that room only. We also like the idea that our space will then be a little bit different and unique from the rest of the house. We will have a tiled shower, a tub that is way bigger than we need, custom cabinet designs based on what I fell in love with on Pinterest, and although really not a grand or large investment, I walked through a model home that had a TV in the bathroom and immediately Mike and I decided that was something we have to have. It is a total little luxury that we don't need, but I am already daydreaming of soaking in the tub with an Angry Orchard in hand while watching Netflix. I anticipate the hubby and I may fight over who gets to spend more time in our new bathroom, which in and of itself tells me that the splurging is totally worth it.

While we didn't splurge on the materials, we did definitely stick to our guns on our floor plan. I knew I would forever regret not having an island in my kitchen, and I also knew that, if possible, I really wanted two story ceilings over the living room. So again, while we could have had granite countertops, custom cabinets, and elaborate detailing throughout our house with a simpler floor plan, we knew that all of that could be changed down the road, but the pitch lines and our roof could not
:-)

8. How do you make sure everything works together?
It is SO important to stay organized when building. You will select HUNDREDS of items, and of course you want it all to match! Get samples of your trim with the stain color. Get swatches of paint. Take pictures of EVERYTHING so you remember the style of your lights, the shape of fixtures, etc. If you have a good idea of the color scheme and style you are going for, I will say it becomes easier because you tend to gravitate towards things that will likely go well together anyway. But by the end of the process, we had a binder and an e-mail folder filled with product details, swatches, samples, order receipts, the works. In the end, trust your gut, and know that you get to do a final walk through to assess if anything needs to be changed, fixed, or replaced ;-)

9. Did you add any unique features?
Yes! There are so many options you don't realize exist until you build a home. We did rounded edges on our walls, which may seem odd when you first think about it. But, coming from the person who as a child sliced her lip on a wall edge (true story), rounded corners with two rough and tumble boys was genius to me.
While not exactly a breakthrough feature, we did upgrade to having sliding shelving in the kitchen for our pots and pans, Tupperware, and garbage.
As I mentioned before, we made sure we had wiring for a TV in our master bathroom!
We built out our fireplace, and didn't extend it up the wall, so our mantle is HUGE. It can literally function as a decorate table, of sorts. I made sure we had wiring for an outlet put in there as well, so this space will function as, what I picture, a fun seasonal décor area.

10. What was the hardest part?
Honestly, I didn't mind the meetings, selecting items, and the beginning process of construction. However, the final month of building is ROUGH. Everything is nearly completed, and I swear the final 3-4 weeks felt longer than the 3-4 months prior. I think because you are not as busy making selections and consulting with sub-contractors, and everything is SO close. I drove by the house for two weeks straight and the darn stone on the porch wasn't completed. And every day that I saw this, I became progressively more angry. Did I know it would eventually get done? Yes. But was the carpet already laid, the inside cleaned, and that darn stone was the finishing piece to me being allowed to move in? YES. I just think by the end of the process seeing your house being basically liveable but not being allowed to live in it gets tough. When the light at the end of the tunnel is practically blinding you because it is so close, you might get a little bit antsy :-) I compare it to the final week or two of pregnancy-time feels like it is at a standstill!

I have wanted to rip my hair out and cry a number of times throughout the process, but in the end I would absolutely build again. There is nothing like walking into a house and knowing you were the mind behind it all. If you have any questions that I didn't touch on, feel free to send them my way, I am happy to answer!

A Final House Update [Linkup]

Hello ladies, and happy Tuesday! My blog game has really been slacking lately, but trust me when I say that I have never had more going on in my life. We just don't slow down over here, and I will definitely be sharing what has been going on lately soon! In the meantime, it is Talk About It Tuesday, and I hope you do join in!
We are due to close on our house in 2-3 weeks, and it feels surreal. Sometimes, the end date feels so far away, but other times I realize it is so dang close I can't believe it! Since my last update, lots of progress has definitely been made!
Jackson is a fan of the house; he loves to drive his trucks in the dirt piles, and he also loves to climb the stairs inside. The stair climbing is not a favorite thing for the rest of us, that child has no fear!
Here is an in progress photo of the paint. It is all finished now, and I love the colors. We did a really neutral and warm beige throughout all of the house, and the master bedroom and bathroom are a very light gray. Eventually, we will paint the boys rooms and bathrooms and spice things up a bit, but to start neutral works just fine!
Here is a shot into the upstairs bathroom right after the tile was put in. We were SO excited to see real floors!
All the heart eyes over our master bathroom tile. I debated at one point scrapping the custom master suite and just going with the style of the rest of the house, but I am so glad we stuck with our plan. It feels like our own special space, and trendy and unique compared to the rest of the house, which is more traditional.
You guys, OUR CABINETS. I can't even describe how it felt walking in and seeing our kitchen decked out with cabinets and countertops. On a fun note, our countertops are actually laminate; I am blown away by how far laminates have come, my sister had to be told they weren't granite because at a glance that is what you would assume. I love how it turned out!
The only painted cabinets of the house are in our master bath, and I can't get enough of the 'greige' color we picked.
I cannot wait to finally get my tub in there! See that cable jack on the wall? I envision lots of soaks in the tub with a glass of wine watching my favorite shows!
Here are the closet doors in one of the upstairs bedrooms.
My fireplace mantle! I am already dreaming up all of the things I will be able to put on my big fat mantle. Garland, a Christmas village? I am so excited to use this space!
And last but not least, at this very moment the siding on our house is being done! The garage and half of the back is done right now, it is so fun to drive by and see so much exterior change from the beginning to the end of the day!

What's left? Concrete on our porch/driveway, finishing the exterior stone and fireplace stone, tiling the shower and bathtub, and carpet! Oh, and putting in our pretty kitchen appliances :-) Like I said, it feels so far, yet so close! By the time I am due for another update, we will be living in our new house! Someone pinch me!

Thankful [Linkup]

Keeping it short and sweet today! Yesterday storms whipped through our area and it was pretty bad. My mom texted me last night to tell me we got 11 inches of rain yesterday. A nearby town had tornadoes touch down and tear up homes and sheds. There were touchdowns in my town but no real structural damages, as far as I am aware. Tree lines down and some flooding, though.

We are used to tornadoes in the Midwest, but I honestly don't think I have ever seen rain like what we saw yesterday. I am feeling thankful all of my family is safe and we didn't see any damage. Say an extra prayer if you can for our nearby town, they have a lot of cleaning up ahead of them to get things back to normal!

House Updates [Linkup]

Well, we are officially getting down to the wire on our construction process, so today seemed like a great time for a house update (for the last update, look here) We still have a solid month or so before the big move (I honestly can't even wrap my head around how close we actually are!) but I know that the month will go incredibly fast. I have about 5 weeks of maternity leave left, so basically as I am gearing up to go back to work, we are also gearing up to finally be in our own place again. It is kind of bittersweet, because the last thing I want to do is wish away my maternity leave. But, it sure does make returning to work easier when I know I will have a new house to come home to after those long days back!

The most up to date view of our house!
In the past few weeks, a lot has been done! Three or so weeks ago, it was pretty rough around here. Mike and his dad did the majority of the heating and plumbing on the house, which resulted in them working basically the entire day Saturday and Sunday, as well as pretty much every night until bedtime all week after work. Lincoln also really had a rough couple of weeks, and while I wouldn't say he is a colicky baby, I would say he was definitely having his moments. Basically, if he wasn't being held/bounced/fed/etc., he was screaming. Of course, he went through this phase during the week where Mike was essentially gone all of the time. So, it was rough on everyone. Fortunately, the little guy seems to have really turned a corner, and while he still gets fussy, it is much less and he is becoming more content (all the hallelujah/hand raise emojis here!)

Seeing the frame take shape

We have a roof!

The first time I was able to take in the view from upstairs
The boys rooms upstairs

During daddy's long work weekend, we had to swing by with pizza for the troops.
Checking out the backyard view with uncle Jeff
Anyway, back to the house! Heating and plumbing are mostly done. We have the shower/tub installed in the upstairs bathroom, and the framework for the shower and tub are in our master suite. The fireplace is installed, too. After some debate, we did decide to go all out on the fireplace, so ours has the ability to look like the embers are lit even when we don't actually have the fireplace turned on. I wasn't so sure at first, but I am pretty excited that even on hot summer nights, we can turn this on and get that warm 'glow' without putting heat out into the room!

Where our tub will be. Definitely need some curtains on that window!

And our shower. So ridiculously excited about our bathroom.

The hubs assessing the new digs. Making sure everything is perfect.

The garage, which is essentially finished!

In terms of structural progress, we are still waiting on the siding. I cannot wait to share what it looks like once it goes on, and really I just can't wait to see it for myself! About a week ago, all of the insulation went in, followed by the sheet rock, and everything is now taped, read to have texture put on. In fact, the walls will start to be painted in the next week! And, we have garage doors! I am definitely liking the fact that the house feels a bit more secure now, especially as the 'things' like appliances and custom cabinets will start being put in soon.

The kitchen pantry (and all the heart eyes)

The living room. OBSESSED and so thrilled we have two story ceilings

The loft upstairs
Still left to be done is all of the trimwork, and installation of the cabinets, flooring, and utilities like our shower/tub, toilets, sinks, and light fixtures. I can't believe that the work that is done from here on out is what will really start to make our house look like an actual HOUSE inside. Feel me when I say that, after sharing a house with others since last September, to be one month away from this house that I swore would never come to be just feels surreal. We constantly daydream about watching Sunday football in our amazing new living room, and this one is mostly just me, but I can't wait to have the privacy to have a bathroom in my bedroom and the ability to not constantly have to be fully clothed? TMI? Sorry, but you don't realize how much you appreciate being able to air dry after a shower until you no longer can. Haha, it really is those little things that make you feel the most at home!

The Perfect Pink [Linkup]

Yes, the cover photo on this post is, in fact a picture of my toes! Keeping things short and sweet today. I mentioned a while back I was on the hunt for the perfect 'Barbie Pink' nail polish, and you guys- I found it! When I got my pedicure last Thursday I actually had another color selected, but this one had been left at my spa station. I saw it and randomly decided to swap out for it, and it is EXACTLY what I have been looking for. I might sound crazy, but I have seriously been on a mad hunt for a pink that is brighter than hot pink, but less bright than neon. This color pops and is so much fun. I ended up writing down all of the bottle details, and found it on Amazon here! It is by DND and is technically a gel polish but I just ordered the color and not the base/top clear polish. And, they had me at the polish name, 'kinky pinky'!
Do you have an absolute favorite nail polish color? There are so many, I always love to hear what the best ones are! Don't forget to grab the button below and link up for Talk About It Tuesday!

Wedding Guest Style [Linkup]

I have always been a huge sucker for dresses. I have been known to look for excuses to buy a dress. I found a dress once upon a time, and when it was marked down from $150 to $50, I basically bought it on impulse, and was able to rock it at my bachelorette party, as well as my bridal shower. Best money I ever spent. Anyway, I only have a few weddings on the docket for this wedding season, and already snagged the beauty below for my brother in laws wedding. The blue is sold out, but you can find other colors here.

That doesn't stop me from looking at all the beauties out there though! Below are some of my favorites that I have stumbled across this summer.
1. I have said it before and I'll say it again, Old Navy has been killing it all year. This dress looks so light and airy, and is totally trendy with the Off the shoulder look for those hot summer days and outdoor weddings!

2. This dress is a great option to beat the heat while dressing things up a bit more. And how fabulous is that bright yellow and tie detail on front?!

3.Maxi dresses are a great option to wear as a wedding guest, and I am loving the high necklines that are in style lately. This option is both stunning and comfortable, which you cannot beat!

 4. I love love LOVE this BB Dakota dress. It is modest and perfect to wear to a church wedding, while still looking super fun and perfect for cutting it up on the dance floor later on.

5. If you are able to pull off something a bit sexier, this strapless dress is perfect and the most amazing color! Can you tell pink is my favorite color?! This one is currently on sale so snag it up! Throw a jacket or cardigan over the top for the ceremony, and ditch it for the reception for a fun, versatile look!

The Second Baby Adjustment [Linkup]

Hello ladies, and happy Tuesday! I am still working on getting back into a regular schedule with my blogging. I keep meaning to put together posts, and then, you know, one baby wants to eat, then the other one wants me to read him a story, and basically by the time I am done reading stories, the other is ready to eat again. The vicious cycle of newborn life! I did manage to find a few minutes and am typing this as one baby naps on my lap and the other is snoozing away on the couch. You better believe I am enjoying this one hour of peace and quiet!

Like every Tuesday, grab the button below, link back to Jenn and I, and talk about what is up with you today!

Today, I am bringing you the realities that happen when you go from one baby to two. I won't say it is necessarily the hardest transition in the world, but it also definitely isn't easy. Ultimately, the biggest change I have faced is having down time. Really, I am lucky to have all of our family right here, and as my mom doesn't work, I have been able to call on her help and assistance nearly every day. I really am spoiled in that aspect. Last weekend, though, Mike had his brother's bachelor party, so I was alone with two kids for essentially the entire day, and let me tell you, even if that man had actually planned on sticking around for the party bus, by 8pm I was about ready to call him in tears and say COME HOME NOW. I didn't, and really felt kind of proud at the end of the day because, well, I survived, but OY. Not my easiest day.

For the sake of memory, I have put together what I am considering the biggest changes when you go from one to two children.

1. You have to learn to say no. This is both a blessing and a curse, but there have already been countless times where I have both children need me, and I have had to decide who needs me more. This definitely results in some guilt, and some pretty overwhelming moments. Quite often, I go with the thought process that my toddler will feel the emotional toll of being forced to wait or not feeling he is getting what he is needing, whereas the baby most likely just wants to eat and can wait a few minutes. It can be tempting to cater to the baby's needs above all, but I do my best to make sure I give them both the attention they need. Still, sometimes your first baby will be crawling at your leg to be held while the second baby is nursing, and that can just be rough.

2. You have no time to yourself. I remember thinking time management was hard when I just had one newborn, and if I could go back in time I would laugh in old me's face. Newborns eat and sleep and poop. During that sleep time, it really isn't much to bring them to run errands with you, or sneak out on a coffee run, or get things done around the house. With two, though? When baby naps, your big kid wants to play. At dinner time while you are trying your best to serve up microwaved chicken nuggets, your newborn will start screaming bloody murder and want to eat NOW. I have managed to shower regularly, only because I bring the baby in the bathroom with me and let him hang in his carseat while I take a quick five minute shower. Really though, those leisurely afternoons of watching hours of Netflix with a newborn sleeping on your chest are long gone!

3. Eating is hard. Cooking in general is nearly impossible in these early weeks, but so is the act of eating. I mean, you are putting the needs of two little people above your own, so it only makes sense that you eat your meals cold, or on the couch with one hand while simultaneously feeding a newborn with the other.

4. Your older child will stress you out. We really have been lucky and Jackson lights up every time he sees Lincoln, but he also has NO concept of how to be gentle, or when it is or is not okay to touch the baby. For example, while I am nursing tends to be prime time for diving in for baby kisses, as is the times when Lincoln is in his swing. And, a 21 month old just doesn't understand that he can't lean forward and put his entire body weight on a fragile little guy like his brother. All making for high stress, high alert mama at all times. I don't want to wish away this precious time, but I will say I am looking forward to the day where Lincoln is a bit more..tough.

5. The love between siblings really will melt your heart. Every day, the absolute very first thing Jackson does is look for his brother. He gives him dozens of kisses during the day, loves to pat his head, and snuggles up in my lap (adorable and also incredibly challenging) when I am holding his brother for double the cuddles. I am so excited for Lincoln to start recognizing who Jackson is, and I can already tell that watching them grow together is going to be incredible.

Poshmark [Linkup]

Happy Tuesday ladies! Due to working an event Sunday, today is technically my Wednesday, and that is reason to celebrate, right!? It is never fun to cut a weekend short, but at least it means I get to kickoff the next weekend that much earlier! Link up with Jenn and I for Talk About It Tuesday, and let us know what is up with you this week!

Today I have to share my love of Poshmark. Have you ladies ever checked it out!? This awesome app allows you to sell your used clothing, as well as buy from others. I don't know about you, but I have brought bags of items to relase stores in my area, and will walk away with $15-20, if I am lucky. Now, that is obviously better than nothing, but I always felt like I was being shortchanged when I thought about how much they were reselling those items for. Poshmark takes the middle man out of the picture, and allows you to sell directly to your buyers!

I recently did a closet clear out, and instead of bringing everything to a resale store, I listed on Poshmark. I have made more money off of four items than I would have made off of an entire bag of goods bringing them in somewhere! The website takes a percentage based on whatever price you list your item at, but then they send you a shipping label that is at no cost to you! You simply pack up your item, I throw in a nice thank you note to my buyer, and you send it off! So easy, and always fun to see that you made a sale. It really is great for allowing you to get value for your items, because who likes getting $5 for a dress you wore once when you spent way more on it? Not me! Trust me, once you start using Poshmark, you won't look bac.

Right now, if you sign up for Poshmark and use this code, you will receive a $10 credit to use online! So not only can you sell your own items, but you can explore what others have as well! Use Code JUWFN for your $10 credit!

Don't forget to grab the button above, link back to Jenn and I, and share your Thoughts today!

Talk About It Tuesday [Linkup]

Hello ladies, and happy Tuesday! Jenn and I are back at it for another 'Talk About It Tuesday' linkup, and do hope you will join in!

Today, I am simply here for a little rant. I try not to get too carried away with my rants, but sometimes, a lady just needs to complain, right!?

So about six months ago or so, my husband finally upgraded his cell phone. He had a smart phone, but the thing was so old he was still grandfathered in under Verizon's 'unlimited' data plan. I had grown accustomed to my 2GB plan, and really had never had any issues with it. I tap into Wi-Fi all the time, and if I ever approached my limit I just turned off my cellular data until the cycle ended. With Mike's upgrade, though, he had to change his plan, and we ended up going with a 6GB plan. Nothing to complain about, as our costs actually went down a bit and I mean, if you split it 50/50, I was actually getting more data than I was used to! Except..

My husband actually uses a good chunk of data. He is not in the habit of tapping into Wifi, and it shows when I look at our breakdown of usage. Every single month, he has used more data than me. Not a big deal, because as long as I am not being told I can't use my phone because of his overuse, what does it matter, right? ;-)

Well, last week we got a text saying we had used 90% of our data. This has happened once before, but it has always been at the very end of our cycle. This time was no different, as we had two days remaining on our month. Or so I thought. Somewhere in those two days, one of us (or both of us, who really knows) managed to use up that remaining 10%. At 8pm on Friday, less than four hours before our cycle closed, we both received a text saying we had hit our data max for the month. So, we both immediately put down our phones for the remainder of the evening, and I even went into my settings to turn off my cellular data so I didn't get charged usage for a random e-mail or something.

Of course, I received our beautiful bill a day or two later, and we were charged $15 for overages, as apparently data was backtracked from earlier in the day Friday, accumulating to a whopping 0.01 GB of data used. They don't charge for the amount you use once you are on overage, but rather they just charge you for the whole darn extra GB. So, despite not being notified until 8pm on Friday, in those remaining 3.5 hours they went and automatically tacked on an entire additional GB, which in the amount of time we had remaining I don't know if we could have used up, even if we tried! I hopped on the phone with customer service, and was basically told once a billing cycle has ended there is nothing they can do. I expected this, as customer service for cell use has never been something I have been impressed by, but COME ON! If overage charges are going to be charged, shouldn't it not kick in until AFTER we are notified? If we both immediately turn off our data once receiving the text, shouldn't we be in the clear? Nope. I guess not. If it weren't a minimal $15 I would probably have complained a lot more, but am entirely unimpressed by the fact that I was charged for something, and three hours later I was onto a new cycle and that data I was just forced into purchasing is now obsolete and no longer available for use (because Verizon is cool and doesn't allow you to carry over unused data).

Long story short, I am watching our data usage way more closely, and my dear husband is going to have to adjust his habits and start using Wifi data at home, or a tablet. And for all that is good and holy, if you get that 90% used notification, just turn the data off. You will be glad you did!

Hope you ladies have things to talk about that are a bit more fun this week, I can't wait to see what you have to share!

Talk About It Tuesday [Linkup]

Hi ladies, did you all survive Monday okay? Getting going with a new work week is never fun, but for some reason I always love when Tuesday rolls around, because after all, we are the furthest away from Monday we are going to be all week, right? ;-)

Join Jenn and I today for our Talk About It Tuesday linkup! Feel free to share anything under the sun. A fun Pinterest find, a DIY project you tackled, or simply what's going on inside of your head today! Grab the button below, insert it into your post, and link back to Jenn and I so we can see what is up with you. I always love the new people that linkups allow me to find, and hope this will serve that purpose for all of you, too!

Today, I am putting a question out to the mama's out there. So those of you that aren't mamas, don't plan to be mama's, or simply aren't interested, feel free to scroll to the end of this post :-) Wubbanubs and Loveys. Are they worth it? I really, really, cannot decide! With Jackson, while he would occasionally take a pacifier up until around when he was six months old (when he started outright refusing them), he was never good with it. It was constantly falling out, getting lost, requiring cleaning..I will never forget when he was about a month old, we were taking some photos with my family on a bridge, and he managed to pop that baby out right into the creek below. And yes, my husband did jump in, get wet up to his ankles requiring a stop at Target for new shoes before running to our next appointment that evening, and retrieve the thing.

My research has told me these little gadgets help with the weight to keep it in baby's mouth, are a little 'comfort' item for your child, and let's be real, they are also adorable. I have my eye on this one, this one, or this one. What have been the experiences of all of you mamas out there? Did your child have one? Did you notice a difference having one versus not having one? Did it make it harder to take the pacifier away down the line? While I am glad we never had to go through that battle, I have also wished MANY times that Jackson had a comfort item, because he really doesn't! No blanket he is attached to, no stuffed animals, no pacifier..as I have mentioned more than once, his way of soothing himself to sleep is by playing with hair (usually mine, even at 2am he can tell if it's dad's hair, which just isn't good enough), and I have lost one too many strands to go through another child using my head as their cozy item!

I can't wait to hear what you ladies think about these things; the good, the bad, and the interesting!!
