Simple Ways To Update Your Master Bedroom

For the first time in my life, living in our new home has empowered me to finally decorate and create my own spaces. When I started dating Michael, he already had his own home which I gradually moved into, and despite living there for over eight years, it was always treated as the 'temporary' home until we moved into our forever home. And, as such, we did very little decorating. We had basics, but rather than collect items that may or may not work in a new space, we waited until we had our new home to buy new furniture, new décor, everything. We really started from scratch; the only furniture we brought to our new home was from the nursery!
Stained trim is very much the norm in Minnesota, so we have dark oak throughout our home. While I love white and wainscoting, it simply isn't done much around here. However, in building we decided to 'break the budget' and not make any sacrifices when it came to our master bedroom/bathroom. While I almost backed out at one point because I was trying to save every last penny I could, my husband told me to do what I wanted, and so while the rest of our house is warm neutrals, I was able to have a master suite with whites and grays. I every day I am so happy we made that choice.
After years of having bright, colorful bedroom sets, I was so excited to create a space that was all my preferences. It is the least kid friendly area of our house in terms of staining and keeping things clean, but it is also our space and I love it. It was a new experience for me decorating a master suite and creating a space that was unique to my style, but I have had a blast doing it. There are four key aspects I kept in mind when planning our room that are great basic concepts when planning a new master suite.

Find the perfect comforter
What I consider one of the most important aspects of a master suite is the comforter. The entire room really will reflect around this piece. I went against everything a mother of young children should do recently and I treated myself to a white comforter. And I could not be more obsessed! When we moved in I initially had this comforter in dark gray, and while I really did love it, the room ended up feeling a bit darker than I wanted. I am shocked by how much switching from a darker to lighter piece on the bed brightened up the space.

Window Fixings
I was incredibly particular about what we put on the windows in our room. We aren't the biggest fans of blinds, but I also know that many drapes are quite sheer and see-through. During those long summer days, we want to block out the sun at 4am as much as possible! On our side window, I find a very light gray blackout shade, that we leave tied up most of the time but can drop for extra privacy or darkness. On our main windows, I knew I wanted blackout drapes but also needed something that was light and airy, and when I found these with the sheer panel on front, I knew I had to have them! I have gotten so many compliments on them; they really add a special touch that makes the space feel almost ethereal and dreamy.

Wall Décor
I am a believer that in a home, the walls fill up over time. You come across pieces that make sense, or hang a new family photo, and those bare walls quickly fill with memories and character. So while I have not rushed to get things hung up, our room definitely needed something above the headboard. I had followed Dear Lily Mae for quite awhile, and she was able to create a custom canvas for me with the phrase Always and Forever. I actually narrowed down options and allowed Michael to make the final selection, which made the piece extra special to me. I also love that, while adding character to the space, it still remains neutral and simple to go with my monochromatic color scheme!

Add A Pop Of Color
I think this is the final piece that can really take your room from simple to unique. Adding a pop of color, especially when you stick to the same color family within a space, really brights things to life! I have always loved yellow; not just yellow in general, but bright, almost pastel, sunshine yellow. I found my pillows (similar here and here) before even moving into our home and they were the perfect additions to our throw pillows. I also grabbed lamps for our end tables in the same shade of yellow at Hobby Lobby (similar styles here and here). While I am so in love with my white room, I am just a little bit more in love with how much the sunshine yellow brings the space to life!

What are some of your favorite ways to recreate a space and make it feel like new?

Lincoln's Nursery

Well, I would call this a room reveal, but we have been in our house for ten months now, and to be honest, this room still isn't complete. The boy's rooms really took a backseat once we moved. The task of furnishing an entire house will do that. They really spend a limited amount of time in them, as they are upstairs, and our master bedroom and the toy room are both downstairs. Their rooms really are just used for sleeping, and as a result, I haven't put much priority into making them complete!
Still, I was excited to give Lincoln his own space, especially because when I brought him home from the hospital, we didn't have a house yet and I wasn't able to prepare for his arrival by planning a nursery. It felt so good to settle in and pull together some sweet colors and décor pieces for him! So, while I kept on waiting thinking I would share once their rooms were complete, I decided I love this sweet little space as it is for now!

Rather than a theme, I really just stuck to a color scheme in his nursery. Mint, gray, navy, with neutral touches were my choice, and I honestly love how they all pulled together!

These letters are similar to the ones I made for Jackson's nursery in our old house. I just spray painted wooden letters, and used painters tape and did some free hand to create the designs!

This rug is the piece that really feels like it pulled the room together. We found it at Lorena Canals! I love LOVE the alphabet design around the outer edges! Both boys went nuts for it, but Lincoln was the lucky winner who gets to have it in his room. And bonus: it is machine washable. One of my biggest anxieties with rugs is honestly the fact that if anything gets dropped on them, they really are not something you can deep clean. I love the fact that if the boys would spill anything, or let's be real, a diaper blowout would happen, this pretty piece can go right in the washing machine without me having to worry about how to get the mess out! And, even though it is washable, it is so soft and plush.

I would still love to add a few more pieces to the room. Maybe a bookshelf in one of the corners? I have always struggled with filling the little spaces in my kid's rooms. I would love to hear your suggestions on the best pieces that could be the finishing touch!

Holiday Home Tour

Ah! It is finally time for a holiday home tour! I swear, decorating for Christmas is one of the things I was most excited about in our new house. Nothing breaks in a home and makes it feel cozier than the twinkle of Christmas lights. I continue to build on our collection every year, especially since deciding on a bit of a theme recently! I also realized once I started decorating that we have ZERO table space in our new house! No entryway table, no living room accent tables, no sofa tables, nothing. I mean, dressers and dining room tables do take priority when moving ;-) So, some of my décor sadly just does not have a place to go this year. An entryway table is next on my list for furniture, but unfortunately I probably won't have that before the holidays. Check back in 2017 to see my Christmas village in action ;-)

The entryway. I would love to have the stockings by the fireplace, but little hands are iffy. I just don't trust stocking holdings and a toddler yet ;-) But they fit perfectly on our railing off of the entryway!

I bought Michael and myself basic stockings and wrote our names on with gold glitter our first year together, and they just stuck for me. These stockings were like $2 a piece, but I kind of love them. Maybe one day when I know the family is 100% complete I will buy some fancier ones, but I kind of love handwriting the names on my babies stockings.

This was the entryway originally. That snowman was affectionately named 'Daddy Snowman' by Jackson, and is now resting peacefully in the garbage after taking a little bit too much abuse from Jackson :-( Poor boy has been walking around whimpering 'Daddy Snowman' ever since we tossed him. I actually just bought a replacement that is slightly less breakable so hopefully that does the trick!

I am in love with our mantle! Both the banner and garland are Target finds this year. I have a Fesh Balsam candle nestled in the garland so our house smells like a Christmas tree even though we have an artificial :-)
I knew I needed the pillow with the first letter of our last name the second I saw it. I am also obsessed with our plaid throw.
Ok so my parents dropped the ball on Elf on the Shelf. We had three elves that moved and got into trouble while we were sleeping as kids before it was even a 'thing'. So instead of getting the mainstream elf, I went online and found an identical copy of the ones my parents have. It is so special to me to carry on the 'original elves' that I grew up with!
I love my countdown house. Jackson caught on quickly and happily repeats 'candy door!' whenever I tell him it is time to open one up for a Rolo ;-)
I am obsessed with these mugs from Hobby Lobby! They have an entire matching dinnerware set actually..I am debating going back for the rest!
The candy cane holder is passed onto me from my mom. I love having little pieces from my childhood!

I love having a fun candy dish in the kitchen. Especially now that I can fill it with all the fun Christmas themed treats!

Our garland. We kind of did a sad job of hanging it, but it sure looks pretty lit up at
night!

The tree :-)
The view from upstairs. All the heart eyes!
I will never grow tired of how cozy our living room is at Christmas time.
And one more view, because I can't get enough!

Fall Home Tour

As promised, I am excited to show a little peek into our fall décor in the new house! Slowly but surely we are building up those pieces that we love to pull out during the seasons to decorate. I have so many grand visions, and am excited every time I add a new piece. It is really quite minimal this year, with me picking up pieces here and there as they catch my eye. I am so excited to deck our house out a little bit more with every passing year and season. Jackson has about had a field day with all of the pumpkins in his life lately. For whatever reason, he calls them 'hi-ya-se-see's'. I don't know what this means, but I do know that next year when he is saying pumpkin correctly I will be a little bit heartbroken. I am trying to savor every little quirk and silly thing he says at this age, it is so much fun! On another note, most of those pumpkins have become favorite toys, or bowling balls to be thrown down the staircase. Needless to say, a lot of our décor is hidden, a lot of the time ;-) Enjoy another little sneak peek into our new home!
